T20 World Cup 2022: Ultimate Match Guide – Australia vs Ireland

Oct. 31, 2022

Key Fantasy Factors - AUS vs IRE

  • Short straight boundaries
  • Long square boundaries on one side
  • New ball pace positive
  • Legspin positive
  • One of the toughest venues for opening batters (gamble against Ireland top order)
  • IRE - RHB heavy (Bring in Zampa)
  • AUS - RHB heavy
The only real differential opportunity we see for the game today is Adam Zampa. The 30-year-old is a world-class bowler, and if Australia isn't too aggressive with him, he will take wickets against a RHB-heavy batting unit on a deck that encourages wrist spin. Ireland's XI has excellent new ball value, so the Australian middle order of Marsh, Maxwell, and Stoinis will get plenty of game time if they bat first. Australia's 5th bowler quota has been a topic of debate throughout the tournament, and with Ireland's top 7 lacking in left-handers, Stoinis is likely to be preferred over Maxwell to bowl the majority of the 5th bowler's quota overs today. This makes the pace bowling all-rounder a strong captaincy candidate regardless of whether Australia bats first or second. Hazlewood and Warner are the other two leading contenders for the C/VC slot, with the former bowling on a deck that suits his style and the latter due for a big score, with only Josh Little capable of stopping him in today's Ireland line-up. Little is unquestionably Ireland's first choice because both Australian openers are vulnerable to left-arm pace, and he will also bowl at the death. Having some Irish batting cushion down the order in the form of Curtis Campher or George Dockrell is a good idea, as going too top heavy with Paul Stirling, Andrew Balbirnie, and Lorcan Tucker is unlikely to end well on the Gabba deck. Because of the nature of the Australian batting unit, Dockrell may bowl a couple of overs today if David Warner is dismissed early. So, in one of your combinations where you don't have Warner in the XI, you can bring in Dockrell because a combination of the two could help you in the grand leagues. Mark Adair is another grand league option you can consider over Josh Little because, in addition to being one of Ireland's top bowlers, he can also bat.
